Happy Earth Day from AYD Waste Management

Happy Earth Day from AYD Waste Management

It’s Earth Day, 2013, and to celebrate, we thought we would talk about some of the positive things going on in the recycling and waste management industries.

The waste management and recycling industries are continuing to improve their methods of dealing with landfills and other collection methods, according to the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program’s most recent report. This has resulted in improved reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.  Industry emissions of methane and carbon dioxide, two major greenhouse gasses, have declined thirty percent over the last twenty years (it could be better, but it could be worse). Gas collected from landfills is now being used as energy to power homes, businesses, and government buildings.

Fun fact: landfills are the third largest emitters of anthropogenic methane in the US, behind collection of natural gas and ruminant animals like cows, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Responsible Waste Management Reduces Greenhouse Emissions

Responsible Waste Management Reduces Greenhouse Emissions

AYD Waste Services strives to be a responsible waste management company by recycling any materials that we can. Reduction and recycling have more environmental benefits than just energy and resource consumption reduction. Did you know that landfills contribute to global warming through greenhouse gas emissions? According to the Environmental Protection Agency,  decomposition that occurs in landfills creates methane, which is a greenhouse gas that is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Additionally, the incineration of waste at landfills creates carbon dioxide and the transportation of waste does as well. When you recycle, you add less material to contribute to methane and carbon dioxide production.

Choose a Responsible Dumpster Rental Company in Austin

Choose a Responsible Dumpster Rental Company in Austin

AYD Waste Management in Austin, Texas recycles any materials that we possibly can after we pick up our dumpsters from a site. This is because we know that as a country, America generates hundreds of millions of tons of garbage every year (according to the Environmental Protection Agency) and that most of this goes into landfills, which can leak, allowing harmful chemicals into the ground and groundwater.

Many of the materials used in buildings can be recycled or reused when a building is torn down. This not only prevents materials like drywall (which contains sulfate that can be harmful when leached into the ground) from entering landfills, but cuts down on energy and resource use. So, when you are looking for a dumpster rental company in Austin, Texas, make sure you choose one that recycles.

recycle drywall

Gypsum drywall can be recycled to prevent landfill crowding, odor, and environmental problems. Gypsum drywall contains sulfate, and when drywall is disposed of in a landfill, water can dissolve this sulfate, leaching it into the ground. This can easily cause groundwater contamination, which can cause a domino effect of serious problems through neighboring ecosystems.

Recycling drywall is a much better option, and by choosing a waste management company that recycles drywall, like AYD, you can help prevent environmental contamination. Recycled drywall can be used to make new drywall, make cement, and used in composting.

March Madness: Early Rounds Come to Austin For First Time in 18 Years

March Madness: Early Rounds Come to Austin For First Time in 18 Years

austin march madness

The March Madness NCAA’s men’s basketball tournament will be coming to Austin for the sixth time ever this Friday and Saturday when the University of Texas will host  early-round games. This is pretty exciting for us in Austin because we don’t get March Madness tournaments here often. South by Southwest usually overlaps it by too much, and  there really isn’t enough hotel space to take care of both crowds. It was announced this morning that the Northwestern State Demons and the Florida Gators will play Friday at 6:30.

Al Wadzinski Makes Awesome Recycled Art

recycled art

This guy is in New York, but we are in the business of recycling, so we thought we’d share some of Al Wadzinski’s really cool recycled art pieces. He doesn’t just make these great pieces out of trash, but he uses found and recycled materials, meaning that he’s keeping a lot of would be junk out of landfills–and reusing is always the best option, even better than recycling. So go Al! If recycled art interest you, check out this guys page at www.nystudiogallery.com/

How Many Leprechauns Fit in a 40 Yard Dumpster?

How Many Leprechauns Fit in a 40 Yard Dumpster?

How many leprechauns could you fit in a dumpster? Well, it pretty much depends on the size of your dumpster and the girth of your leprechauns. But, for the sake of argument, let’s take our 40 yard construction dumpsters and say that all of your leprechauns have kept up with their gym memberships. Why do you have all these leprechauns? I don’t know; they’re your leprechauns. Maybe you are throwing a Saint Patrick’s Day party and you need caterers, or you’re planning a tiny green flashmob.

Anyway. A full sized dumpster at 40 square yards has an area of 1320 feet. Leprechauns, if they aren’t too fat, generally clock in at three feet tall and aren’t going to be much wider than 2 feet. So if you’ve got leprechauns that are about 6 square feet, you could fit 220 of them in a 40 yard dumpster, if you packed them in there like sardines. Just remember though, they aren’t going to grant you any wishes or tell you where the gold is if you make them mad. But they might make your dumpster rental lucky!

NOTE: AYD Waste does not condone the abuse or entrapment of any living creature magical or not, nor will we haul away your leprechauns. See our FAQ for answers as to why, although that should be obvious. You got yourself into this mess, so you’ll have to get rid of them yourself. Most other messes though, we’ve got you covered. Also, all AYD Waste dumpsters are automatically lucky, no leprechaun required.
