Happy Earth Day from AYD Waste Management

Happy Earth Day from AYD Waste Management

It’s Earth Day, 2013, and to celebrate, we thought we would talk about some of the positive things going on in the recycling and waste management industries.

The waste management and recycling industries are continuing to improve their methods of dealing with landfills and other collection methods, according to the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program’s most recent report. This has resulted in improved reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.  Industry emissions of methane and carbon dioxide, two major greenhouse gasses, have declined thirty percent over the last twenty years (it could be better, but it could be worse). Gas collected from landfills is now being used as energy to power homes, businesses, and government buildings.

Fun fact: landfills are the third largest emitters of anthropogenic methane in the US, behind collection of natural gas and ruminant animals like cows, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Responsible Waste Management Reduces Greenhouse Emissions

Responsible Waste Management Reduces Greenhouse Emissions

AYD Waste Services strives to be a responsible waste management company by recycling any materials that we can. Reduction and recycling have more environmental benefits than just energy and resource consumption reduction. Did you know that landfills contribute to global warming through greenhouse gas emissions? According to the Environmental Protection Agency,  decomposition that occurs in landfills creates methane, which is a greenhouse gas that is 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Additionally, the incineration of waste at landfills creates carbon dioxide and the transportation of waste does as well. When you recycle, you add less material to contribute to methane and carbon dioxide production.

Choose a Waste Management Company that Recycles Drywall

Choose a Waste Management Company that Recycles Drywall

recycle drywall

Gypsum drywall can be recycled to prevent landfill crowding, odor, and environmental problems. Gypsum drywall contains sulfate, and when drywall is disposed of in a landfill, water can dissolve this sulfate, leaching it into the ground. This can easily cause groundwater contamination, which can cause a domino effect of serious problems through neighboring ecosystems.

Recycling drywall is a much better option, and by choosing a waste management company that recycles drywall, like AYD, you can help prevent environmental contamination. Recycled drywall can be used to make new drywall, make cement, and used in composting.
